Tustin, CA (February 1, 2025) – A hit-and-run crash early Saturday morning claimed the life of Imanol Salvador Gonzalez, 19, of Santa Ana.
Accident Details: Imanol Salvador Gonzalez was hit by a vehicle near Nisson Road and Del Amo Avenue before 4 a.m. Upon arrival, officers found Gonzalez deceased and discovered debris from a vehicle indicating a hit-and-run. Investigators identified the suspect vehicle as a black 2021 Chevrolet Silverado crew cab pickup registered to Carlos Gonzalo Coronel, a Los Angeles police sergeant. Coronel was arrested and booked into the Orange County Jail on Sunday.
Coronel is also facing a probation violation related to a prior DUI conviction in 2011, for which he had previously failed to complete community service hours.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. Under California law, drivers involved in an accident are legally required to stop, assist, and report the incident. Coronel’s alleged decision to flee the scene may constitute the basis for criminal and civil consequences. Investigators will assess Coronel’s driving behavior, including potential speeding, distraction, or impairment, to determine additional factors that contributed to the crash.
Gonzalez’s family may be able to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit against Coronel. Such a claim could seek compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and emotional trauma. In cases involving a public employee, liability questions may also extend to the employing agency under certain circumstances.
I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Imanol Salvador Gonzalez during this heartbreaking time.
