Petaluma, CA (April 6, 2025) – An incident in Sonoma County has claimed the life of 3-year-old Ian De Jesus, who was fatally crushed by a Bobcat tractor last week in Petaluma, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office. The operator of the tractor, suspected of being under the influence at the time, has been arrested and faces multiple felony charges.
Incident Details: The fatal incident occurred around 12:35 p.m. on March 30 at a property located on Skillman Lane, where Ian De Jesus lived with his family in a rental unit. According to the California Highway Patrol, the young boy ran into a field where the tractor operated. Despite being under supervision at the time, De Jesus was tragically struck and pronounced dead at the scene.
The tractor operator, identified as 64-year-old William Medrana of Rohnert Park, was working for the property owner and is unrelated to the victim. CHP investigators reported observing signs of intoxication and subsequently arrested Medrana on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence. He was booked into the Sonoma County Jail.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: the investigation is ongoing. In addition to Medrana’s arrest on DUI-related manslaughter charges, authorities will assess whether road conditions, safety oversight, or machine malfunction contributed to the incident.
The De Jesus family may also have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim, depending on the outcome of the investigation. This claim could help the family seek compensation for funeral costs, emotional anguish, and the loss of their young son’s future.
I extend my deepest condolences to the family of Ian De Jesus during this difficult time.
