Harbor City, CA (September 25, 2025) – The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office has identified the motorcyclist who died in a hit-and-run crash in Harbor City as 35-year-old Sergio Maya.
Accident Details: The fatal collision occurred around 12:55 p.m. on the Pacific Coast Highway near Western Avenue. Investigators said Maya was riding his motorcycle eastbound on PCH when a silver van traveling west made a left-hand turn directly into his path. The sudden movement caused Maya to lose control of his motorcycle.
Moments later, an older-model pickup truck that was also heading west on PCH struck Maya after he had gone down. Neither of the two drivers stopped to assist, and both vehicles fled the scene.
Emergency crews with the Los Angeles Fire Department attempted life-saving measures, but Maya died at the scene from his injuries.
Police closed sections of the roadway as detectives collected evidence and worked to piece together what led to the deadly crash.
Investigation: Detectives will focus on identifying the two vehicles involved and understanding the sequence of events that resulted in Maya’s death. Areas of emphasis may include:
- Physical evidence. Investigators will analyze debris, vehicle parts, skid marks, and the position of the motorcycle to reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the crash.
- Witness accounts. Statements from motorists or pedestrians who saw either the collision or the vehicles fleeing may provide key details such as license plate numbers or identifying features.
- Surveillance footage. Detectives will likely review video footage from nearby businesses, traffic cameras, and residential security systems to trace the silver van and pickup truck involved in the crash.
- Vehicle characteristics. The silver van and older-model pickup will be the subject of a region-wide alert, with investigators working to match descriptions to known vehicles in the area.
The Los Angeles Police Department’s South Traffic Division is leading the investigation into this dual hit-and-run incident.
Legal Considerations: Fatal collisions raise significant legal questions about negligence and accountability. Because both drivers left the scene without rendering aid, the case is being treated with urgency. Hit-and-run collisions endanger victims by delaying medical attention and can hinder investigators in holding responsible parties accountable.
Depending on the investigation and whether the drivers are located, Maya’s surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Such a claim can be brought when a person’s unlawful or careless actions cause another’s death. Compensation may cover funeral and burial costs, the loss of the deceased’s financial support, and resulting emotional distress.
I extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Sergio Maya.
