Granada Hills, CA (October 17, 2024) – A tragic hit-and-run incident occurred in Granada Hills on Thursday, resulting in the death of 21-year-old motorcyclist Sebastian Brown of Newhall.
Accident Details: Brown was riding his motorcycle on Devonshire Street when he failed to stop at a red light near Louise Avenue, colliding with a vehicle. After being ejected from his motorcycle, he was tragically struck by two separate vehicles, an SUV and a sedan, both of which fled the scene. A reward of up to $50,000 is being offered to anyone who provides information leading to the identification, apprehension, and conviction of the drivers involved in the hit-and-run. The Los Angeles Police Department’s Valley Traffic Division continues investigating the case and urges anyone with information to contact the authorities.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. Fleeing the scene of a crash, especially after striking someone who is already in a vulnerable position, displays a disregard for public safety and California traffic laws. Hit-and-run laws are in place to protect victims and ensure that drivers take responsibility for their actions following an accident. If the SUV and sedan drivers are located, they could face criminal charges.
Wrongful Death Claim: Additionally, there may be grounds for the Brown’s family to file a wrongful death lawsuit. This claim could potentially allow them to seek compensation for the loss of their loved one, including funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and emotional distress.
Comparative Negligence: Investigators may determine that Brown was negligent when he ran the red light. However, this would not necessarily bar his family’s compensation for his death. Under California’s comparative negligence laws, they may still be able to recover some compensation.
My deepest sympathies go out to Sebastian Brown’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. I hope the investigation gives them the answers and closure they need.
