North Highlands, CA (June 15, 2024) – On the evening of June 15, 18-year-old Shawn Jordan tragically lost his life after being struck in a hit-and-run crash on Walerga Road.
Accident Details: The accident happened just after 8 p.m. on the north end of the overpass crossing Roseville Road. A witness reported seeing a light green Toyota Prius fleeing the scene. Despite immediate assistance from a homeless man who called paramedics, Shawn slipped into a coma the following day and succumbed to his injuries in the hospital on Thursday, June 20.
Investigation: The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is currently investigating the fatal hit-and-run. The North Sacramento office has urged anyone with information about the incident to contact them at 916-348-2300.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several factors warrant further examination. If the cause of the accident was negligence, Jordan’s family may be able to file a wrongful death claim and recover compensation, including funeral and burial expenses. The primary focus is identifying the driver and the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run. Gathering eyewitness accounts, surveillance footage from nearby businesses or traffic cameras, and any available dashcam footage from other vehicles in the area are crucial steps. Investigating the speed at which the vehicle was traveling and whether the driver exhibited any erratic behavior before the crash is also essential. This investigation includes checking for signs of reckless driving, distraction, or impairment. Hit-and-run cases carry significant civil and criminal legal consequences. Analyzing Walerga Road’s conditions, including the presence or absence of sidewalks, street lighting, and road signage, can provide insights into contributing factors to the accident. The lack of a sidewalk, in particular, raises questions about pedestrian safety in the area. This aspect may implicate the local municipality in negligence for failing to maintain safe roads.
My sincerest condolences go to the family and friends of Shawn Jordan during this devasting and heartbreaking time.
