Hit-and-Run Crash Claims Life of Jesus Portillo in Mission Hills

Mission Hills, CA (April 7, 2025) – A pedestrian was struck and killed in a hit-and-run crash late Sunday night in Mission Hills. Authorities have identified the victim as 50-year-old Jesus Portillo of North Hills, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Incident Overview: The collision occurred around 9:25 p.m. on April 6 in the 14700 block of Devonshire Street, just east of Woodman Avenue. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, Portillo was crossing the street outside a marked crosswalk when a black SUV hit him. Emergency responders arrived to find Portillo with fatal injuries, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The SUV driver fled the scene before police arrived, and as of Monday, investigators have not released a description of the suspect or the vehicle involved.

Detectives with the LAPD’s Valley Traffic Division seek the public’s help identifying the driver. They ask anyone with witness information, surveillance footage, or dash cam video from the area around the time of the crash to come forward.

Investigation and Legal Considerations: California law makes clear that all drivers involved in a collision must stop, provide aid if necessary, and report the incident to authorities. Leaving the scene of a fatal crash is a felony offense.  A full investigation will be necessary to determine fault and to ensure accountability.

Portillo’s family may also be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim if the suspect is identified, which could help address the financial and emotional burdens caused by this senseless loss.

I extend my condolences to the family and loved ones of Jesus Portillo.
