Fatal Hit-and-Run on Interstate Claims Life of Mikey Negrete

Chula Vista, CA (May 13, 2024) – On the night of May 13, a devastating incident unfolded on Interstate 5 near Main Street in Chula Vista, California, leading to the tragic death of 27-year-old Mikey Negrete.

Accident Details: According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the accident occurred just past 9 p.m. Mikey Negrete was driving his Volkswagen from his grandmother’s house to his home in National City. Witnesses reported that a Ford Mustang cut off Negrete’s vehicle, causing it to roll over. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigation: A witness provided the CHP with the Ford Mustang’s license plate number, Although the Mustang driver has been contacted, no arrest has been made. The investigation remains ongoing. Officials urge the public to contact the CHP San Diego region at 858-293-6000 if they have any information about the accident.

Legal Considerations: As a seasoned personal injury lawyer, several factors warrant examination. The primary question revolves around the liability of the Mustang driver. The witness account that the Mustang cut off Negrete’s vehicle suggests potential negligence or reckless driving. Investigating whether the Mustang driver violated traffic laws, exhibited dangerous driving behavior, or was under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be critical. If it is established that the Mustang driver fled the scene without rendering aid or reporting the accident, they could face severe penalties under California law. Hit-and-run incidents, especially those resulting in fatalities, carry significant legal consequences, including potential criminal charges. Negrete’s family also may be able to file a wrongful death claim and recover compensation, including funeral expenses.

My sincerest sympathies to Mikey Negrete’s family and friends. His family has a GoFundMe page to help with funeral expenses. Please contribute if you can.
