Two Killed in Tractor-Trailer Crash on U.S. 221 in Jeff Davis County

Jeff Davis County, GA (March 5, 2025) — A violent collision between a tractor-trailer and a dump truck on U.S. Highway 221 claimed the lives of two drivers Wednesday afternoon. The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) is investigating the circumstances of the crash.

Incident Overview: Authorities report that the crash occurred at U.S. 221 and Roper Road intersection when a Volvo tractor-trailer failed to stop at a stop sign and crashed into a Freightliner dump truck, striking its left driver’s side.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, 52-year-old Chandra Rahming of Douglas, suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. The driver of the dump truck, 61-year-old James Griffin of Baxley, was transported to Jeff Davis Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Emergency responders closed part of U.S. 221 for several hours while crews cleared debris and investigators collected evidence. Officials have not reported any additional injuries or other vehicles involved.

Investigation and Legal Considerations: The GSP is investigating the crash and will assign liability based on several factors. These include whether the tractor-trailer driver failed to yield the right of way, any driver negligence such as distraction, fatigue, or impairment, and truck safety compliance. The trucking company may share liability if the tractor-trailer had mechanical defects or was improperly loaded.

Depending on the findings, the trucking company may be liable for Rahming’s actions. Due to the loss of life, the Griffin family may be eligible to file a wrongful death suit to seek compensation.

This tragic crash highlights the deadly consequences of failing to obey traffic signals—particularly for large commercial vehicles. I extend my heartfelt sympathies to the Griffin and Rahming families. I hope that the investigation will bring them answers and justice.
