Gregg Umipeg Killed After 13-Year-Old Crashes Stolen Car in Elk Grove

Elk Grove, CA (June 3, 2024) – A devastating crash resulting from a police pursuit of a stolen vehicle led to the death of a Sacramento man in Elk Grove. The victim was identified as 55-year-old Gregg Umipeg of Sacramento.

Incident Overview: The incident unfolded around 9:20 p.m. Monday when Elk Grove Police received reports of a stolen vehicle near Grant Line Road and Highway 99. Officers located the vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop, which led to a pursuit. The chase eventually entered a neighborhood, where police momentarily lost sight of the vehicle. As the stolen vehicle, driven by a 13-year-old, exited the neighborhood onto Laguna Boulevard, it collided with a Nissan, driven by Umipeg, turning onto Franklin Boulevard. The impact of the crash resulted in severe injuries to Umipeg who was rushed to a hospital. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The young driver of the stolen car was also taken to the hospital following the accident. After receiving medical attention, he was arrested and booked into Juvenile Hall on several charges, including felony evading and felony evading resulting in death or serious injury.

Investigation and Legal Implications: This incident is under thorough investigation by the Elk Grove Police Department. The juvenile’s involvement in such serious offenses raises complex legal questions about juvenile justice and the appropriate handling of young offenders in high-stakes situations. In this case, there is also a question of whether the police chase itself should have been called off due to the risk to the public. Based on the complexity of this situation, the family of the victim may benefit from speaking with a wrongful death attorney about their rights.

My deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Gregg Umipeg during this incredibly difficult time. I hope that they receive the support they need following this awful incident.
