Grapevine, CA (October 5, 2025) – A 41-year-old motorcyclist, identified as Angel Barraza Garcia of Paramount, was killed Sunday morning after he and another rider collided with an SUV that made an illegal U-turn on the 5 Freeway near Grapevine Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Accident Details: The crash occurred around 11:30 a.m. when two motorcyclists were traveling southbound in the fast lane. CHP investigators said an SUV attempted a U-turn through a turn-thru at Grapevine Road, pulling directly into the path of the riders. Both motorcyclists struck the SUV and were thrown from their bikes. Emergency responders transported Garcia and a second rider, 39-year-old Edgar Romo, to Kern Medical. Garcia was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, while Romo was treated for major injuries. The SUV’s occupants were not injured. All lanes were shut down for several hours as authorities cleared debris and documented evidence.
Investigation: CHP officers confirmed that the turn-thru where the SUV made the U-turn is not meant for public use. Investigators are reviewing statements, physical evidence, and roadway markings to determine if the driver violated traffic laws or acted negligently. The investigation remains active, and no citations have been announced.
Legal Considerations: Collisions involving motorcycles and turning vehicles often hinge on questions of right-of-way and safe turning practices. When a driver makes an illegal maneuver, liability may extend to both the individual motorist and, in certain cases, their insurer. Families of victims may be entitled to pursue wrongful death claims, while injured riders can seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering if negligence is proven.
This was a devastating loss for Mr. Garcia’s family and friends, and a reminder of the dangers posed by unsafe turns on busy highways. I extend heartfelt condolences to his loved ones and hope for a full recovery for Mr. Romo.
