South Los Angeles, CA (December 22, 2024) – On Sunday, December 22, 2023, 23-year-old Giovanni Hernandez Santiago tragically lost his life in a multi-vehicle collision on the northbound Harbor (110) Freeway near Manchester Avenue in South Los Angeles.
Accident Details: The California Highway Patrol reported that the crash occurred around 5 a.m. and involved a black sedan and a gray cargo van in the express lanes. During the collision, Santiago was ejected from his vehicle. Shortly thereafter, an out-of-service Metro bus traveling northbound struck him. Authorities temporarily closed all northbound lanes to investigate the collision.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. Given the number of vehicles involved, determining liability may be complex.
- Initial Collision: The cause of the initial crash between the black sedan and the gray cargo van is unknown. Investigators will likely examine factors such as speeding, distracted driving, mechanical failures, poor road conditions, or unsafe lane changes.
- Bus Involvement: The Metro bus’s role in the incident will be reviewed. An investigation will determine whether the driver’s actions were reasonable.
Wrongful Death Claims The family of Giovanni Hernandez Santiago may consider filing a wrongful death claim to seek compensation for their loss. Such claims could address damages for funeral and burial costs, loss of financial support, and emotional pain of losing a loved one.
I extend my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Giovanni Hernandez Santiago during this unimaginably difficult time.
