Cle Elum, WA (March 10, 2025) — A three-vehicle crash on Interstate 90 eastbound claimed the life of a Lewiston man Monday afternoon, according to the Washington State Patrol (WSP).
Incident Overview: The collision happened shortly after noon, within Cle Elum city limits. Investigators say a semi-truck failed to slow for traffic, slamming into the back of an SUV driven by 70-year-old Gary Hartig. Hartig sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center, where he later died. His passenger, 71-year-old Wilma Hartig, was not injured.
The semi-truck, operated by 59-year-old Igor Grudovik of Spokane Valley, also struck a sedan driven by 60-year-old Michael Berger of Chicago. Berger was uninjured and able to leave the scene on his own.
WSP cited Grudovik for negligent driving. Authorities confirmed that neither drugs nor alcohol were factors in the crash.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Investigators continue to review whether distraction, fatigue, or violations of federal trucking regulations—such as hours-of-service or speed compliance—played a role in the crash. Mechanical failure and vehicle maintenance records are also being examined.
Pending the outcome of the investigation, the Hartig family may have grounds for pursuing a wrongful death lawsuit. This legal action hinges on determining negligence or intentional wrongdoing on the part of a responsible party. These lawsuits compensate the family for damages or costs related to funeral and burial expenses, loss of financial support, loss of companionship, and emotional distress.
The Hartig family is in my thoughts during this difficult time.
