Fernando Rodrigues, 25, Killed in Illinois Motorcycle Collision

Braidwood, Illinois (April 11, 2026) — A 25-year-old man was killed Saturday morning in a crash involving a motorcycle and a semi-truck on northbound Interstate 55 near Braidwood, according to Illinois State Police.

Officials identified the deceased as Fernando Rodrigues of Normal. He was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The crash happened just after 11:15 a.m. on northbound I-55 near Reed Road.

Incident Details: According to Illinois State Police, the motorcycle and semi-truck made contact in the northbound lanes of Interstate 55. The impact threw Rodrigues from the motorcycle. He was transported to a hospital but did not survive. A short stretch of northbound I-55 was closed for about four hours during the initial investigation.

Public reporting has not yet provided additional details about how the vehicles came into contact, whether either vehicle was changing lanes, or what actions led up to the collision. At this stage, the known facts are limited, but the crash was serious enough to require a lengthy freeway closure and an ongoing state police investigation.

Investigation: In a crash like this, investigators will likely focus on the movement of both the motorcycle and the semi-truck in the moments before impact. In freeway motorcycle collisions, key issues often include lane position, speed, visibility, following distance, and whether either vehicle made an unsafe movement.

Investigators may also review vehicle damage, roadway evidence, witness statements, and any available dashcam or traffic camera footage to determine exactly how the contact occurred. Because public facts are still sparse, crash reconstruction may be especially important in determining whether the motorcycle was struck during a merge, a lane change, or another maneuver. This is the kind of collision that calls for a careful review of a few seconds of evidence that can make all the difference in understanding what happened and why.

Legal Considerations: Fatal crashes involving a motorcycle and a semi-truck often raise serious civil liability questions, especially before fault has been publicly determined. In a commercial vehicle case, a civil investigation may also examine the truck driver’s conduct, the trucking operation, and other safety issues that may not be clear from the initial report alone.

Pending the investigation’s findings, the family of Fernando Rodrigues may have a valid opportunity to pursue a wrongful death claim that could provide compensation for funeral and burial expenses, loss of financial support, and the loss of companionship, care, and love.

My deepest condolences go out to Fernando’s family and loved ones.
