Johnson Valley, CA (July 15, 2024) – An 84-year-old Palm Desert resident, David Bell, tragically lost his life after his 2024 Toyota Prius collided with a propane truck on Old Woman Springs Road. Gabriel Trujillo and Steven Borrego were injured.
Accident Details and Investigation: The accident occurred in the afternoon, just east of Rattlesnake Canyon Road. Bell’s Prius crossed the double-yellow lines at an unknown speed, entering the path of a Ford propane truck driven by Gabriel Trujillo, 35, of Adelanto. The truck, traveling at approximately 65-70 mph, struck the Prius with a forceful impact, causing Bell to be ejected from his vehicle and fall onto the highway. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at the scene. It is unknown why Bell crossed the double-yellow lines. Trujillo and his passenger, 52-year-old Steven Borrego of Apple Valley, were assisted by passersby and subsequently transported to Desert Regional Medical Center with moderate injuries. The case is currently under investigation. Drugs and alcohol are not considered to be factors.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination to determine the cause of the accident. Investigators must determine why Bell crossed the double-yellow line. Was the road clearly designated? Was there a mechanical malfunction with the Prius that caused Bell to cross over the line? Was Bell driving within the speed limit? Were any of the drivers impaired? Depending on the investigation’s findings, Bell’s family may be able to file a wrongful death claim against the party responsible for the accident. Similarly, Trujillo and Borrego may be able to file personal injury claims.
My sincerest condolences are with the family and friends of David Bell during this difficult time. I wish Gabriel Trujillo and Steven Borrego a fast recovery.
