Fatal Hit-and-Run in Los Angeles Claims the Life of Lai Har Chu

Los Angeles, CA (January 13, 2025) – On Monday, January 13, 2025, a tragic hit-and-run accident in Echo Park claimed the life of 87-year-old Lai Har Chu of Monterey Park.

Accident Details: The incident occurred around 6:50 PM at the intersection of Berkeley Avenue and Allesandro Street. Chu was walking westbound inside a crosswalk when she was struck by a dark-colored Ford Transit van traveling southbound on Allesandro Street. The motorist fled the scene without stopping to render aid. Chu was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigation: The LAPD is actively investigating the incident and seeking the public’s help identifying the hit-and-run driver. They are offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the suspect’s identification, arrest, and conviction.

Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. Leaving the scene of an accident, especially one involving serious injury or death, is a serious crime. The driver of the Ford Transit van could face felony charges. The driver’s actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for human life and a failure to fulfill their legal and moral obligation to stop and assist after an accident.

Potential Wrongful Death Claim: Chu’s family may have grounds to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the hit-and-run driver. This claim seeks to compensate the family for their losses, including funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and emotional distress.

My deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Lai Har Chu. I hope they find the support they need during this heartbreaking time.
