El Cajon, CA (September 1, 2024) – An East County family is mourning the tragic loss of 81-year-old Augustine Youhanna Sana, who was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver while walking home from church in El Cajon on a Sunday morning.
Accident Details: The incident occurred Sunday morning as Sana walked home from church. He was at the intersection of Jamacha Road and Brabham Street. According to witness Issac Askandar, Sana was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk with the walk signal when a gold car traveling very fast made a right turn and hit Sana.
After striking Sana, the driver briefly exited the vehicle and blamed Sana for the accident. He then fled the scene in the car. Sana was taken to a hospital, where he died the following day. The investigation is ongoing. Law enforcement encourages the public to contact them with any information about the driver’s location and the accident.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. In cases involving hit-and-run accidents, one of the key challenges is identifying the driver responsible for the crash. Law enforcement typically pursues this through witness statements, surveillance footage, and forensic evidence from the scene, such as tire marks or debris. A thorough investigation might also involve canvassing the neighborhood for additional security camera footage or eyewitnesses who may have seen the vehicle before or after the incident.
From a legal perspective, the family of Augustine Youhanna Sana could potentially pursue a wrongful death claim and recover damages for the loss of their loved one, such as funeral expenses, loss of income, and emotional distress.
My deepest sympathies go out to the Youhanna family during this challenging and heartbreaking time.
