Fatal Head-On Collision Claims Life of Susan Lorraine Insch

Kern County, CA (September 23, 2024) – The Kern County Coroner’s Office has identified Susan Lorraine Insch, 70, of Lompoc, as the victim in a fatal crash on Highway 33 on September 23, 2024.

Accident Details: The incident occurred at approximately 3:40 p.m. near Soda Lake Road, when a semi-trailer traveling southbound on Highway 33, driven by a 24-year-old Bakersfield man, veered into the northbound lane and collided head-on with a Toyota Tundra.

Insch, a passenger in the Toyota, tragically lost her life at the scene. The driver of the Toyota, a 72-year-old man, sustained severe injuries and was airlifted to Kern Medical for treatment. The condition of the Toyota driver remains unknown. The driver of the semi-trailer suffered minor injuries and received treatment at the scene. Authorities have stated that drugs and alcohol were not factors in the collision.

Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination.

  • Behavior of the Semi-Truck Driver: Investigators must determine why the semi-truck driver crossed into the northbound lane. Was the driver distracted, fatigued, or otherwise negligent?
  • Mechanical Issues: Investigators should also examine if a mechanical failure in the semi-trailer, such as brake or steering issues, contributed to the incident. Maintenance records for the semi-trailer must be reviewed for equipment failure.
  • Road and Traffic Conditions: Investigators should determine if road conditions, such as limited visibility or inadequate signage, may have contributed to the collision. If the road was not properly maintained, the local municipality may be deemed negligent.

If negligence is found to be the cause of the accident, Insch’s family may be able to file a wrongful death claim. With this claim, they may be able to recover compensation for their loss, including funeral expenses and emotional distress. The driver of the Toyota may be able to file a personal injury claim and recover medical expenses, lost wages, and damages for pain and suffering.

I extend my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Susan Lorraine Insch during this difficult time. I wish the Toyota driver a fast recovery. My thoughts are with all those affected by this devastating accident.
