Farm Tractor Driver Killed in Chowan County Crash with Tanker Truck

Chowan County, NC (March 27, 2025) – A farm tractor operator was killed Thursday afternoon when a commercial tanker truck struck the rear of the tractor on Highway 32 in Chowan County, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Accident Details: The crash occurred around 12:20 p.m. and involved a tanker truck carrying liquid nitrogen and a John Deere tractor equipped with a rear-mounted hydraulic Rhino blade.

Troopers say the tractor was attempting to turn left into a farm path when the tanker truck began to pass. The tanker struck the blade attachment, causing the tractor to veer off the highway. The tractor then hit a ditch and overturned, ejecting the driver, who died at the scene.

The tanker truck also ran off the road and came to rest partially in a field. Its driver was not injured.

Authorities have not yet released the name of the deceased pending notification of next of kin.

Legal Considerations: Crashes involving agricultural equipment and commercial vehicles often raise questions about visibility, passing distance, and timing. In this case, investigators will likely review whether the tanker attempted to pass safely, whether the tractor signaled its turn, and whether the truck had sufficient space to overtake.

The presence of the rear-mounted blade may factor into the investigation as officials assess whether it was clearly visible and compliant with equipment safety standards. The fact that the tractor was turning left while being passed on a two-lane highway will likely be central to determining how and why the two vehicles collided.

Depending on the findings, the victim’s family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim if negligence is established.

Ongoing Investigation: North Carolina State Troopers continue to investigate the crash. No charges have been announced, and both vehicles will likely be inspected for mechanical issues and compliance with safety requirements.

I extend my sincere condolences to the family and friends of the tractor operator.
