Union City, CA (April 10, 2025) – An 81-year-old woman was killed, and a driver was seriously injured following a tragic series of collisions Tuesday night on Dyer Street near Cabello Drive, according to the Union City Police Department (UCPD).
Incident Overview: The incident occurred around 8:50 p.m. on April 8, when a driver struck a pedestrian—later identified as Evelyn Simangan of Union City. After the collision, the driver exited his vehicle to check Simangan’s condition. At that point, both the pedestrian and the driver were struck by a second vehicle.
Officers arrived at the scene to find both individuals with major injuries. Simangan was pronounced dead at the scene, while the first driver was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later reported to be in stable condition.
The second driver remained at the scene and cooperated fully with the investigation. Authorities have stated that neither driver appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Anyone with additional information about the incident is encouraged to contact UCPD.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: The Union City Police Department continues investigating the events that led to the back-to-back collisions. The investigation will assess road visibility, pedestrian right-of-way, lighting conditions, and vehicle speed during the crash. The second driver’s actions will also be evaluated to determine whether speed or inattentiveness played a role in the second collision.
Depending on the outcome of the investigation, Simangan’s family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim, particularly if driver negligence is found to have contributed to the fatal outcome.
We extend my condolences to the family and loved ones of Evelyn Simangan and wish the injured driver a full recovery.
