Erwin Queja De La Cruz, 50, Killed; Three Juveniles Seriously Injured in Oakley Stolen Car Crash

Oakley, California (February 24, 2026) — A 50-year-old Oakley man was killed Tuesday morning after a stolen vehicle traveling at high speed crashed into his car, authorities said. Three juveniles inside the stolen vehicle suffered significant injuries and were hospitalized.

The victim was identified as Erwin Queja De La Cruz, of Oakley.

Incident Details: According to the Oakley Police Department, the incident began earlier that morning when Antioch Police officers attempted to stop a gray Honda sedan reported stolen two days earlier in Oakland. Authorities said a firearm was inside the vehicle when it was initially taken.

Antioch officers initiated a pursuit but later terminated it. Shortly thereafter, the Honda crossed into Oakley city limits at approximately 10:24 a.m.

Oakley police said an officer in the area observed the Honda traveling at speeds of approximately 80 mph and initiated a pursuit. The vehicle allegedly continued at excessive speeds down Main Street and through multiple major intersections, including Live Oak Avenue, Big Break Road, Empire Avenue, Teakwood Avenue, and Vintage Parkway.

Officials stated that just seconds after a supervising sergeant terminated the pursuit, the Honda collided with another vehicle at the intersection of O’Hara Avenue and Laurel Road.

The violent impact killed De La Cruz. Three juveniles inside the stolen Honda sustained major injuries, including one boy who was ejected from the vehicle. All three were transported to hospitals for treatment. Their identities have not been released due to their ages.

Investigation: The Oakley Police Department is investigating the crash. In high-speed pursuit-related collisions, investigators typically examine the timing of pursuit termination, vehicle speeds, intersection signal phases, braking evidence, and impact reconstruction.

Authorities will likely analyze event data recorders from the involved vehicles, surveillance footage from surrounding intersections, and radio communications between officers to establish a precise timeline.

Because the crash occurred shortly after the pursuit was called off, investigators may also review compliance with departmental pursuit policies and whether the suspect vehicle was still actively being followed at the time of impact.

Legal Considerations: Fatal crashes involving stolen vehicles and fleeing suspects often lead to both criminal and civil consequences. The juveniles involved may face serious charges depending on the investigation’s findings, including potential charges related to vehicle theft, evasion, and homicide. Liability assessments can become complex in cases involving police pursuits. However, courts often examine whether officers acted within policy and whether the fleeing driver’s independent criminal conduct was the primary cause of the collision.

De La Cruz’s family members have the option to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the at-fault parties. This claim could cover costs related to medical care, funeral expenses, lost income, loss of companionship, and other damages. Additionally, the seriously injured juveniles may be able to file personal injury claims to help cover their medical and rehabilitation costs.

During this difficult time, I offer my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Erwin Queja De La Cruz. I also sincerely hope for a swift and complete recovery for the injured youth.
