Motorcyclist Ernesto Fontes, 20, Killed in South Los Angeles Collision

South Los Angeles, California  (April 12, 2026) — A 20-year-old man was killed Sunday afternoon in a motorcycle crash at East 53rd Street and Compton Avenue in the Central-Alameda area, according to authorities.

Officials identified the deceased as Ernesto Fontes. He was taken to a hospital after the collision, where he was pronounced dead.

The crash happened at about 4:30 p.m. at East 53rd Street and Compton Avenue.

Incident Details: According to a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman, Fontes was riding southbound on Compton Avenue when his motorcycle collided with a vehicle traveling eastbound on 53rd Street. Police said Fontes was ejected from the motorcycle and landed on the ground. Paramedics transported him to a hospital, but he did not survive. Public reporting has not yet identified the other driver or explained which vehicle had the right of way at the time of the collision.

Investigation: In a crash like this, the investigation will likely turn on one basic question: which vehicle entered the intersection when it was unsafe to do so. At a city intersection, that often means looking closely at signal timing, lane position, speed, and whether either driver tried to brake or swerve before impact. The fact that Fontes was ejected suggests a forceful collision, so reconstruction of the impact angle and point of contact may become especially important.

Investigators may also review witness statements, nearby surveillance footage, and damage to both vehicles to determine whether this was a failure-to-yield case, an unsafe turn, or some other intersection error. Motorcycle cases often come down to visibility and judgment. A driver may say the rider “came out of nowhere,” but that is not the same as proving the rider could not be seen.

Legal Considerations: This kind of case often depends less on broad legal theories and more on a very specific traffic analysis. That is why early evidence matters so much in intersection motorcycle fatalities. Skid marks fade, video gets overwritten, and witness memories start changing fast.

Depending on the outcome of the investigation, Fontes’ family may have grounds for a wrongful death claim, which can help them with funeral, burial, and medical costs and compensate for the emotional and non-financial losses. A civil case here would not just be about damages. It would also be one of the main tools for determining exactly how this collision occurred and whether it was preventable.

My deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Ernesto Fontes.
