Emily Rew, 37, Killed; Multiple Drivers Injured in Five-Vehicle Chain-Reaction Crash in Lake Elsinore

Lake Elsinore, California (March 24, 2026) — A multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 15 on Tuesday afternoon resulted in the death of a 37-year-old San Diego woman and left several other individuals injured, authorities reported.

The victim was identified as Emily Rew.

The crash occurred just before 4:00 p.m. on northbound Interstate 15 north of Main Street.

Incident Details: According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision involved five vehicles in what investigators described as a chain-reaction crash.

Preliminary findings indicate that a gray Toyota Tacoma driven by a 32-year-old Perris man struck the rear of Rew’s green Kia Niro.

The force of the impact pushed the Kia from the #3 lane into the #2 lane, where it entered the path of a white Dodge Ram truck towing a trailer, driven by a 50-year-old Los Angeles man.

Authorities said the Dodge Ram then collided with the Kia before continuing into additional vehicles, including a red Toyota Highlander driven by a 69-year-old Lake Elsinore man and a black Honda Accord driven by a 38-year-old Murrieta woman.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene and treated multiple individuals.

Rew sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead as a result of the crash.

Several other drivers suffered minor injuries. The drivers from Perris and Lake Elsinore were transported to local hospitals, while the Murrieta woman and the Los Angeles man were treated at the scene.

The crash prompted the closure of all northbound lanes of I-15 for several hours, with traffic not fully restored until approximately 8:00 p.m.

Investigation: The California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash. In chain-reaction freeway collisions, investigators often focus on following distance, speed, and driver attentiveness, particularly in determining how the initial impact set off subsequent collisions.

Crash reconstruction teams will likely analyze vehicle spacing, braking patterns, and impact sequences to determine whether the initial rear-end collision could have been avoided. Investigators may also examine whether any drivers were following too closely or failed to react in time to changing traffic conditions.

Because the crash involved multiple impacts across several lanes, authorities may also evaluate traffic flow, lane changes, and visibility conditions at the time of the collision.

At this time, no arrests or citations have been announced. The investigation remains ongoing.

Legal Considerations: Multi-vehicle chain-reaction crashes often present complex liability issues, particularly when an initial rear-end collision triggers a series of impacts involving multiple drivers. These cases often require a detailed analysis of driver conduct, traffic conditions, and the sequence of events to determine how responsibility is shared.

In many cases, the driver who initiates the chain reaction by failing to maintain a safe following distance may bear primary responsibility. However, liability can extend to multiple parties depending on how each driver responded in the moments leading up to the crash.

If the investigation determines negligence, the family of Emily Rew may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim to address the significant emotional and financial impact, acknowledging the profound and devastating consequences of her loss.

My heartfelt condolences go out to the Rew family and loved ones, and I sincerely hope for a complete recovery for all those who were injured in this accident.
