Elkhart County, IN (June 9, 2025) – A tragic incident on Sunday evening claimed the life of 56-year-old Ronald Mast after he struck a horse while driving on County Road 38, according to local authorities.
Incident Details: Police say Mast was traveling westbound near the intersection of County Road 43 when a horse ran into the roadway. His vehicle collided with the animal, and officers responded to the crash just after 10 p.m. Mast was pronounced dead at the scene. The horse also died in the collision.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding how the horse came to be loose. At this time, no criminal charges have been filed. Authorities have not indicated whether the animal had escaped from a local property.
