Fresno, CA (September 28, 2025) – An older man is in critical condition after being hit by a Fresno Area Express (FAX) bus at a busy Fresno intersection on Sunday afternoon.
Accident Details: The collision occurred at approximately 12:15 p.m. at the intersection of Blackstone and Gettysburg avenues. Police reported that the pedestrian, described as an older man, suffered a severe injury to his right arm when the bus struck him.
Responding officers applied a tourniquet at the scene until paramedics arrived. The man was then transported to Community Regional Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition.
Investigation: The Fresno Police Department confirmed that its Collision Reconstruction Unit has taken over the investigation. They will likely take the following actions to determine how the accident occurred:
- Analyze the crash scene. Investigators will likely map out the crash site and measure skid marks. Visibility and traffic signal timing at the intersection will also be taken into consideration.
- Examine the bus’s recording system. Investigators will review the bus’s black box or onboard camera systems for real-time data on speed, braking, and steering.
- Interview witnesses. The bus driver, passengers, and witnesses nearby should be questioned to establish the sequence of events and clarify the pedestrian’s location at the time of impact.
- Inspect documents. Officers may inspect maintenance and brake records to rule out equipment failure, and review dispatch communications to ensure operating procedures were followed.
- Collect recordings. Investigators may also canvas nearby businesses for surveillance footage that may have captured the accident.
Accident reconstruction may be used to identify what happened, validate conclusions, and support the final collision report.
Legal Considerations: Collisions involving large vehicles, such as buses, can cause especially severe injuries due to their size and weight. All drivers are required to exercise caution and obey traffic signals and laws. When these rules are not followed, or when a driver’s actions are careless, they may be held liable for the damage their negligence caused.
If negligence is established, the injured pedestrian may have grounds to pursue a personal injury claim. Such claims allow victims to seek compensation for medical bills, the cost of rehabilitation, lost wages if they cannot work during recovery, pain and suffering, and reduced quality of life.
My thoughts are with the injured man and his family during this time. I wish him a fast recovery.
