DUI Crash Kills Eli Abram Lopez in Orange Cove

Orange Cove, CA (October 19, 2024) – A tragic crash over the weekend claimed the life of 27-year-old Eli Abram Lopez and left others injured.

Accident Details: On Saturday night, Lopez was driving with his girlfriend in Orange Cove after meeting with his family for the first time when their vehicle was involved in a deadly collision. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that while Lopez was stopped at the intersection of Manning and Hill Avenue, 24-year-old Jesus Zeferino crashed into Lopez’s Honda and another car. Lopez’s car caught fire. His girlfriend escaped with major injuries, but Lopez tragically died at the scene. Zeferino is now facing felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter charges for the crash.

Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. DUI crashes like this one are considered highly negligent because they demonstrate a reckless disregard for the safety of others. Operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs breaches a driver’s duty to act with care while on the road, putting both other drivers and pedestrians at significant risk. If it is confirmed that Zeferino was intoxicated at the time of the crash, this could further strengthen the argument for negligence.

Civil Claims: In addition to the criminal charges, Zeferino may also face civil consequences. Lopez’s family may have grounds for a wrongful death lawsuit, which would allow them to pursue compensation for their devastating loss, including funeral expenses and emotional distress. Lopez’s girlfiend may be able to file a personal injury claim and recover medical expenses, loss of income, and pain and suffering.

My deepest condolences go out to the Lopez family as they navigate this unimaginable loss. The incident left Lopez’s family heartbroken, as they had reunited with him just days before. Lopez had moved to Kingsburg from Guatemala, dreaming of starting a car wash business and building a better life. His family has set up a GoFundMe account to help cover expenses to bring Eli back to Guatemala and funeral costs.
