Garden Grove, CA (July 7, 2024) – Orange County prosecutors have filed felony charges against Ceferino Ascencion Ramos, 29, for allegedly running over a family of five while driving with a blood alcohol content (BAC) nearly three times the legal limit.
Accident Details: On the evening of Sunday, July 7, Angel Ramirez and Angela Hernandez-Meija were taking their three young children for an electric bike ride in Garden Grove. Ramirez was pulling a trailer with their 5-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter, while Hernandez-Meija was pulling their 7-month-old daughter in another trailer. They were traveling along the 12300 block of Haster Street at Twin Tree Lane when Ramos allegedly struck all five family members and fled the scene.
Accident Aftermath: The collision has left Ramirez with a fractured skull and brain bleed, and he remains in a coma. Tragically, the couple’s 5-year-old son is also in a coma without any brain activity. Their daughter, who turned 7 the day after the collision, remains in critical condition following surgery. Hernandez-Meija and their 7-month-old baby suffered minor injuries and are expected to survive.
Ongoing Investigation: Witnesses quickly alerted the police and followed Ramos, who officers later apprehended. Upon arrest, Ramos’s BAC was recorded at .22%, significantly above the legal limit of .08%. Ramos is facing several charges for driving under the influence and causing bodily harm, including felony charges.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. Given Ramos’s BAC of .22% and the serious charges against him, his actions seem to implicate negligence. Ramos’s actions directly caused the accident and the resulting injuries, making him potentially liable for the family’s suffering. The family may be able to pursue civil damages against Ramos. This can include medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages, and future care needs, especially considering the severe injuries and the potential for lifelong medical care.
I wish Angel Ramirez and Angela Hernandez-Meija and their three children a speedy recovery. My sincerest thoughts to them and their family and friends during this difficult time.
