Donovan Chapman, 25, Killed in Big Rig Crash in Arleta

Arleta, California (December 22, 2025) — Authorities have identified the man killed early Sunday morning in a freeway collision involving a big rig and a passenger vehicle in the Arleta area of Los Angeles as Donovan Chapman, 25, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Incident Details:  The crash was reported at approximately 3:43 a.m. Sunday on the northbound Golden State (5) Freeway, just south of the Osborne Street off-ramp near the Hollywood (170) Freeway interchange, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officers arrived to find a collision involving a tractor-trailer and a sedan. Chapman was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities did not immediately clarify which vehicle he had been traveling in at the time of the crash. No other injuries were reported in initial statements.

All northbound lanes of the I-5 were shut down for several hours as investigators worked the scene and crews cleared debris. A SigAlert remained in effect through the early morning hours before lanes were reopened.

Investigation:

The California Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. In early-morning freeway collisions involving commercial trucks, investigators typically examine vehicle positioning, lane usage, and whether either vehicle was stopped, disabled, or making an unsafe maneuver at the time of impact.

CHP investigators will analyze physical evidence, including impact points, skid marks, debris patterns, and the final resting positions of both vehicles, to reconstruct the sequence of events. They may also review traffic camera footage from the nearby freeway interchange and obtain electronic data from the involved vehicles to assess speed, braking, and steering inputs prior to the collision.

Additional factors under review often include driver fatigue, visibility conditions, lighting, and whether any mechanical issues or roadway hazards contributed to the crash. The investigation remains ongoing, and CHP has not announced whether citations or charges are expected.

Legal Considerations: Fatal freeway crashes involving large commercial trucks are particularly devastating due to the size and force disparity between vehicles. Even a brief lapse in attention or a minor traffic error can have catastrophic consequences at highway speeds.

If investigators determine that negligence played a role, whether through unsafe lane changes, following too closely, excessive speed, or failure to account for roadway conditions, Chapman’s loved ones may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Such claims can help families seek accountability and compensation for funeral expenses and the profound loss of companionship and support. While no legal action can undo this tragedy, a thorough investigation and accountability can help ensure that the full truth of what happened is brought to light.

I extend my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Donovan Chapman during this difficult time.
