San Francisco, CA (March 16, 2024) – A horrific crash at a San Francisco bus stop resulted in the deaths of a couple and their toddler, with their infant son critically injured. The incident, which occurred over the weekend near the West Portal Muni station on Ulloa Street, has left the community in shock and mourning.
Incident Overview: The elderly driver of an SUV, identified as 78-year-old Mary Fong Lau, was arrested on multiple charges, including vehicular manslaughter, reckless driving, and driving the wrong way on a divided road. Witnesses reported that Lau was driving between 50 and 70 miles per hour in the wrong direction without showing signs of braking before the crash.
Victims Identified: Friends of the victims have identified the family involved in the tragic incident. Diego, 40, and Matilde, 38, were celebrating their wedding anniversary with their two sons, intending to visit the San Francisco Zoo. Their toddler, approximately one and a half years old, died at the scene, while their two-month-old baby boy was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Matilde succumbed to her injuries, marking the third fatality in this devastating crash.
Community Response and Vigil: The neighborhood has been coming together to pay respects, leaving flowers, stuffed animals, and toys at a makeshift memorial at the bus stop. Street safety advocates have also placed a white stroller and three pairs of shoes at the site, symbolizing the lives lost. A vigil was planned to honor the victims and call attention to the need for improved street safety.
Legal Implications: The arrest of the driver underscores the serious legal consequences of reckless driving. As the investigation into the crash continues authorities will examine all factors, including potential medical conditions that may have contributed to the driver’s actions. Additionally, the family of the victims may pursue a wrongful death claim for their loss of their loved ones, including medical costs, pain and suffering, and loss of companionship.
My thoughts are with the surviving infant and the family affected by this unimaginable loss. This is perhaps one of the worst pedestrian accidents in San Francisco in recent memory. I hope that the family receives the support they need during this exceptionally difficult time.
