Scio Township, MI (May 25, 2025) – A 47-year-old woman from Dexter was killed early Saturday morning after her SUV veered off Interstate 94 near Jackson Avenue and crashed into the woods, according to the Michigan State Police (MSP).
Accident Details: Troopers were alerted to the crash just after 5:15 a.m. by Ford’s vehicle notification system. Upon arrival, officers found a semi-truck and an SUV stopped on the shoulder. Both drivers reported hitting an unidentified object, and the semi driver mentioned seeing headlights in the woods.
Troopers and firefighters conducted a search and discovered a Ford Expedition that had veered off the interstate and collided with a tree deep in the woods. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not yet been released.
MSP believes alcohol may have been a factor in the crash. Investigators later determined that the debris struck by the semi and SUV was likely part of the Ford Expedition’s wheel assembly.
Legal Considerations: Crashes involving suspected alcohol use can carry legal consequences even in single-vehicle incidents, especially when debris causes secondary hazards to other motorists. Authorities may examine whether earlier intervention or safer roadside detection technologies could have prevented or minimized the crash’s severity.
In this case, no other injuries were reported, but investigators will continue analyzing vehicle data and scene evidence to complete the case file.
Ongoing Investigation: The MSP Brighton Post is leading the investigation. Anyone with information is urged to call 810-227-1051. Toxicology results and additional crash reconstruction details are pending.
I extend condolences to the family and loved ones of the woman who lost her life in this tragic incident.
