Daniel Matos Guadarrama Fatally Struck on Silverado Trail

Napa Valley, CA (March 16, 2024) – A heartbreaking incident early Saturday morning on Silverado Trail North claimed the life of 26-year-old Daniel Matos Guadarrama of Yountville. The Napa County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office has confirmed his identity following the tragic accident.

Incident Overview: Guadarrama’s vehicle experienced a breakdown north of Oak Knoll Avenue on Silverado Trail. Around 4:10 a.m., while he was moving about the roadway for unknown reasons, a southbound silver Toyota RAV4 SUV, driven by a woman at approximately 55 mph, collided with him. According to initial reports, the driver was unable to avoid the collision upon noticing Guadarrama on the east side of the road. The impact resulted in major injuries to Guadarrama, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigation Details: The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported significant front-end damage to the woman’s vehicle. An off-duty Sonoma County sheriff’s deputy, who had previously observed Guadarrama in a different location on the roadway, returned to provide medical aid. Despite these efforts, Guadarrama could not be saved. Evidence and witness statements suggest that the headlights of Guadarrama’s disabled car may have impaired the visibility for southbound traffic on Silverado Trail, making it difficult for drivers to see him. The CHP is further investigating Guadarrama’s sobriety at the time of the incident, while there were no indications that the SUV’s driver was impaired.

Legal and Safety Implications: This tragic event highlights the dangers faced by individuals on or near roadways, especially during the early hours when visibility is reduced. The ongoing investigation by the CHP Napa Area aims to clarify the circumstances leading to the accident and determine any contributing factors. If it’s determined that suspected visual impairment caused by the headlights wasn’t a major factor in the collision, Guadarrama’s family may be able to pursue a wrongful death claim for their loss. The main question remaining is whether or not the driver could have reduced their speed when they knew their vision was impaired. Based on the extensive damage to their vehicle, it’s possible that they didn’t slow down when noticing the bright headlights. However, further details from the investigation would provide a better idea of what happened leading up to the collision.

I offer my sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Daniel Guadarrama. I hope that they receive the support they need during this difficult time.
