Fresno County, CA (March 7, 2025) – A tragic two-vehicle crash in Fresno County claimed the life of 18-year-old Daniel Avila.
Accident Details: The accident occurred around midnight at the intersection of West Kamm and South Brawley Avenues. Authorities say Avila was driving a Ford truck westbound on Kamm Avenue while a semi-truck was traveling eastbound. Both vehicles collided near the center of the roadway between the two lanes. Avila sustained serious injuries and died at the scene, while the semi-truck driver was not injured.
Investigation: Investigators are looking into what caused the vehicles to meet in the center of the road and whether speed, distraction, or other factors played a role. California Highway Patrol (CHP) Officer Anthony Dalton noted that the Ford truck may have had a dash cam, which could provide crucial evidence in determining the sequence of events leading up to the crash. Toxicology reports are pending, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Legal Considerations: In head-on collisions, vehicle positioning, and right-of-way violations are critical in determining fault. Investigators will examine whether one of the vehicles drifted over the centerline if driver error contributed, or if road conditions played a role in the crash. Authorities will assess whether speed or driver distraction factored into the crash. If either driver traveled too fast for the conditions or failed to react in time to avoid a collision, it could indicate negligence.
Investigators will analyze the Ford truck’s dash cam footage, vehicle damage patterns, the semi’s black box, accident scene evidence, and toxicology results to reconstruct the crash. If available, witness statements and nearby video surveillance and traffic cameras may also provide insight into the moments leading up to the crash.
If negligence is found, Avila’s family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim.
I extend my deepest condolences to Daniel Avila’s family, friends, and the Caruthers community as they grieve their loss.
