Cyclist Killed by Tractor-Trailer Making Wide Turn in Eureka

Eureka, CA (May 6, 2025) –  A tragic collision took the life of a cyclist Tuesday morning at the intersection of West Harris Street and Union Street, just one block west of Zoe Barnum High School.

Accident Details: The collision occurred shortly before 9 a.m. when a tractor-trailer was turning right from Union Street onto West Harris Street, a tight intersection with known visibility issues. Witnesses and officials confirmed the crash involved a cyclist and that the fatal impact happened as the truck completed its turn.

The Eureka Police Department (EPD) closed the surrounding streets while they investigated the scene. The victim’s identity has not been released as of this writing.

Investigation and Legal Considerations: At this stage, the crash is still under active investigation by both the Eureka Police Department and the California Highway Patrol. Authorities have confirmed that they are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and are seeking additional witness statements.

Investigators will likely focus on the angle and mechanics of the truck’s right turn, whether the driver checked for cyclists or pedestrians before turning, whether the cyclist was within a designated bike lane or crosswalk, and the visibility and road design at the intersection

Depending on the investigation’s findings, the victim’s family may have grounds to file a wrongful death lawsuit.

I extend my condolences to the family and friends of cyclist who lost their life.
