HARRIS COUNTY, TX (July 9, 2025) – A bicyclist was killed Wednesday in a hit-and-run crash involving an 18-wheeler on the East Freeway in east Harris County, according to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.
Accident Details: The incident occurred near Market Street and Dell Dale Street along I-10. Authorities say the cyclist was struck by an 18-wheeler, and the driver of the truck did not stop at the scene.
Sheriff Gonzalez shared details of the crash on social media just before 1:00 p.m. The identity of the cyclist has not been released.
The crash forced northbound and southbound traffic on Beltway 8 to be diverted, and the I-10 exit for Dell Dale was closed temporarily. Drivers were advised to exit at Sheldon Road and use a U-turn to reach Dell Dale.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident and searching for the driver of the 18-wheeler. In Texas, leaving the scene of a fatal crash is a serious offense and may lead to both criminal charges and civil liability.
Commercial truck drivers have strict legal obligations to remain at the scene of any collision, especially when someone is injured or killed. Investigators will review surveillance footage, eyewitness reports, and traffic cameras to identify the truck and its driver.
We extend our condolences to the family and loved ones of the cyclist whose life was lost in this tragic event.
