Collision Near Sanger High School Kills Hubert Hsu and Injures Bethany Ray

Sanger, CA (February 25, 2025) – An accident claimed the life of 17-year-old Hubert Hsu and left another student, Bethany Ray, with serious injuries after they were struck by a truck while walking in a crosswalk near Bethel and Almond Avenues.

Accident Details: The crash occurred just before 7:30 p.m. near Sanger High School. According to Sanger police, the truck struck both students as they crossed the intersection. Hsu was killed, while Ray suffered significant injuries. The Sanger Unified School District later confirmed that Ray is responsive and communicating.

Residents Raise Concerns About Dangerous Intersection: Residents have voiced ongoing concerns about pedestrian safety at the intersection of Bethel and Almond Avenues. City officials have since announced plans to add traffic signals at the crosswalk, with completion expected by the summer.

Investigation and Legal Considerations: Crosswalk accidents often involve serious liability issues, and investigators will examine multiple factors to determine fault. First, investigators must determine who had the right of way. They will examine traffic cameras, nearby video surveillance, and witness statements to do this. Authorities should also determine if the driver was speeding, distracted, or failed to check for pedestrians before entering the intersection.

Although the city is adding safety measures to the intersection, authorities should determine how long the dangers were known. If the city is found to have known about the risks at this intersection but failed to act sooner, it could raise municipal liability concerns.

If negligence is found, Hsu’s family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim, and Ray could file a personal injury lawsuit.

I extend my sincerest condolences to Hubert Hsu’s family during this difficult time. I wish Bethany Ray a fast recovery.
