Homosassa, FL (March 12, 2025) – A crash claimed the life of 50-year-old Crystal Hix Jackson, a beloved ESE and social studies teacher at Lecanto Middle School. The accident also left Jackson’s three children injured as they were on their way to school.
Accident Details: The two-vehicle collision occurred around 7 a.m. on West Homosassa Trail, between Rock Crusher Road and State Road 44. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), Jackson was traveling eastbound in her Dodge minivan. A westbound dump truck attempted to turn left into 4816 W. Homosassa Trail and collided with Jackson’s vehicle.
Jackson was pronounced dead at the scene. Her three children—two daughters, ages 16 and 15, and a 12-year-old son—suffered injuries and were transported to separate hospitals in Ocala and Gainesville for treatment.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Investigators will assess whether the dump truck had the right-of-way or if the driver failed to yield before making the left turn. Due to their size and weight, dump trucks require greater stopping distances and visibility awareness. Authorities will examine multiple factors to determine how the crash occurred and whether negligence was involved. Traffic camera footage and witness statements will be critical in confirming whether the truck signaled and had sufficient time to make the turn safely. Investigators will also review black box data from the dump truck, which may reveal the vehicle’s speed and braking pattern before impact. Additionally, accident reconstruction experts will analyze the scene to determine whether the truck driver exercised reasonable caution or if driver misjudgment played a role in the fatal crash.
If negligence is found, Jackson’s family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim to seek justice and compensation for funeral costs and emotional suffering. A personal injury claim may be able to be brought on behalf of the children for any injuries suffered.
I extend my condolences to Crystal Hix Jackson’s family, students, and colleagues. I also wish her children a full recovery.
