Placer County, CA (April 15, 2025) – A California Highway Patrol officer and a passenger were seriously injured Tuesday afternoon after a vehicle struck a CHP patrol car during a roadside enforcement stop along Interstate 80 near Horseshoe Road in Loomis.
Incident Details: The crash occurred while a CHP officer was preparing to transport a person off the freeway. A Toyota traveling eastbound veered into the shoulder and collided with the patrol vehicle. The Toyota continued eastward, ultimately crashing into a tow truck, rolling over, and landing on its wheels. Both the officer and the passenger inside the patrol vehicle sustained suspected serious injuries and were transported to the hospital. The driver of the Toyota suffered minor injuries. Following the crash, eastbound lanes #2 and #3 of I-80 were closed east of Horseshoe Bar Road for emergency response and investigation.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash, including whether distraction, impairment, or a mechanical issue led to the Toyota driver veering off course. Incidents like this also raise awareness of California’s “Move Over” law, which requires motorists to slow down and change lanes when approaching emergency or maintenance vehicles stopped on the side of the road.
Our thoughts are with the injured CHP officer and the individual receiving transport during this difficult time.
