Cesar Paz, 22, Daniel Tam, 23, and Third Man Seriously Injured in Snow-Related South Lake Tahoe Crash

South Lake Tahoe, California  (February 16, 2026) — Two young men remain hospitalized after a snow-related crash on State Highway 50 near South Lake Tahoe, where a pickup truck lost control and struck a small group attempting to put on tire chains, according to authorities and family members.

Cesar Paz, 22, of San Leandro, and Daniel Tam, 23, of Concord, were among three people injured in the collision. A third 23-year-old man from San Jose was also hurt, though his name has not been publicly released.

Incident Details: The crash occurred on February 16 along a snowy stretch of Highway 50. Authorities said Tam had pulled over to install tire chains when Paz and another good Samaritan stopped to help him.

While the group was outside the vehicle, a pickup truck reportedly lost control on a snow-covered road and ran into them.

Paz suffered multiple broken bones and other severe injuries, according to his family. He remains hospitalized in critical condition. Daniel Tam was also seriously injured and remains hospitalized, though friends say he may be discharged in the coming days pending further testing.

Tam’s fundraiser organizer stated that he was briefly “clinically dead” at the scene and had no pulse until first responders used a defibrillator to revive him. He is now conscious but has spoken very little as he continues to recover.

The third injured man from San Jose has not had his condition publicly updated.

Investigation: Snow and icy conditions are frequently contributing factors in Sierra corridor crashes during the winter months. In roadway incidents like this, investigators typically examine vehicle speed relative to conditions, tire equipment compliance (including chain requirements), braking patterns, and whether the driver exercised reasonable caution given weather advisories.

Highway 50, particularly near South Lake Tahoe, is known for rapid weather changes and chain-control enforcement during storms. Authorities will likely evaluate whether the pickup truck driver was traveling at a safe speed for conditions and whether loss of traction could have been avoided through proper equipment or defensive driving.

No information has been released regarding citations or criminal charges. The crash remains under investigation.

Legal Considerations: Weather-related crashes can raise complex liability questions. While snow and ice create hazardous conditions, drivers still have a legal duty to operate their vehicles safely. California law requires motorists to reduce speed appropriately and maintain control when weather impacts visibility or traction. This incident underscores the dangers of winter mountain driving, not only for motorists traveling at highway speeds but also for those stopped along the shoulder attempting to comply with chain-control requirements.

If an investigation determines that negligence contributed to the crash, Paz, Tam, and the other injured victim may have grounds to pursue personal injury claims to recover medical costs, lost wages, and long-term rehabilitation expenses.

I extend my deepest hopes for healing and recovery to Cesar Paz, Daniel Tam, and the third injured individual as they face a long and challenging road ahead.
