Fatal Multi-Vehicle Accident in La Quinta Claims Three Lives

La Quinta, CA (May 14, 2024) – On the night of May 14, 2024, a tragic accident at the intersection of Highway 111 and Simon Drive in La Quinta resulted in the deaths of three individuals and left another person with significant injuries.

Accident Facts: According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to the scene around 9:20 p.m., finding two motorcycles and a white Chevrolet pickup truck involved in the crash. Upon arrival, emergency responders discovered four individuals suffering from severe injuries. Despite life-saving efforts by CalFire and AMR, three victims were pronounced dead at the scene. The Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s Burea later identified the three deceased as 26-year-old Brandt Celli from Indio, 33-year-old Maria Reyes from La Quinta, and 47-year-old Katherine Vogts from Palm Desert. The fourth individual was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Investigation: The initial investigation revealed that the incident began when two motorcycles were traveling eastbound on Highway 111. One motorcyclist collided with a pedestrian crossing the road. The motorcyclist was ejected from the impact. The motorcycle slid into the westbound lanes. While good Samaritans attempted to assist the ejected motorcyclist, a westbound Chevrolet pickup truck struck the motorcycle, resulting in fatal injuries to the motorcycle rider, the pedestrian, and one of the assisting individuals. The pickup truck driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Authorities do not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the accident.

Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I believe several critical aspects of this case warrant close examination. Determining the exact sequence of events and identifying potential negligence is crucial. Negligence claims may allow for the victims’ families to pursue a wrongful death claim. This assessment includes the actions of motorcycle riders, pedestrians, and pickup truck drivers. Questions arise about whether all parties adhered to traffic laws and exercised due caution. For instance, was the pedestrian crossing at a designated crosswalk? Were the motorcyclists driving at appropriate speeds for the conditions? The answers to these questions are essential in establishing liability.

Road Conditions and Visibility: It is essential to investigate the conditions at the time of the accident. Factors such as lighting, road signage, and visibility at the intersection can significantly impact the dynamics of the crash. Additionally, the quality of the road surface and any potential hazards present at the time could be contributing factors.

Mechanical Failures: Examining the involved vehicles for any mechanical failures or defects can also be relevant, as any malfunction could have contributed to the accident’s severity. Any failure in the vehicles’ systems could shift liability.

My thoughts and condolences go out to the families of Brandt Celli, Maria Reyes, and Katherine Vogts during this incredibly difficult time.
