Manitowoc County, WI (June 15, 2025) – A 27‑year‑old man operating a horse‑drawn carriage was killed Sunday morning on US Highway 10 in the Township of Cato, while his 13‑year‑old passenger was seriously injured.
Incident Details: Just before 9 a.m., a 42‑year‑old woman driving a 2020 GMC Terrain eastbound on US 10 struck the rear of the carriage. The impact ejected both occupants from the carriage. The carriage operator died at the scene, and the minor was transported to a hospital with significant injuries. Authorities responded promptly, closing the highway and dispatching emergency medical and fire services.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: The Wisconsin State Patrol is leading a full reconstruction of the crash. Investigators will examine factors including rear-end impact dynamics, vehicle speed, and braking action. The operator’s family may consider wrongful death and injury claims against the SUV driver, with liability depending on evidence of negligence. Insurance coverage and state slow-moving vehicle statutes could influence compensation eligibility.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the victim’s family and wish the injured child a full recovery.
