Carlsbad, CA (August 9, 2025) — A suspected DUI driver was arrested Saturday after a collision in Carlsbad left one person dead, according to authorities.
Incident Details: The crash happened at approximately 5:20 a.m. at the intersection of La Costa Avenue and Piraeus Street. Police say a Subaru crossover driven by 33-year-old Philip Webb of Oceanside collided with a Nissan pickup truck. The Nissan’s driver was transported to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Their identity has not yet been released.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: The Carlsbad Police Department reports that alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash. Webb was arrested on suspicion of DUI causing injury or death and vehicular manslaughter and is set to be booked into the Vista Detention Facility. Fatal collisions involving suspected impaired drivers often lead to criminal charges and may also result in civil wrongful death claims by surviving family members.
