Carlsbad, California (September 13, 2025) — A man was arrested Saturday after a bicyclist was struck and killed in a hit-and-run that closed a stretch of Carlsbad Boulevard near the beach for several hours.
Incident details: According to the Carlsbad Police Department, officers discovered a bicyclist deceased in the roadway on Carlsbad Boulevard between Tamarack Avenue and Cannon Road around 4:34 a.m. The driver involved in the collision fled the scene. With assistance from community members, license plate readers, and a drone, police located the suspect vehicle about one mile from the crash site. Officers arrested 27-year-old Alexander Gendron of Escondido. He faces charges including leaving the scene of a collision resulting in injury or death, DUI causing injury or death, and vehicular manslaughter. Carlsbad Boulevard between Tamarack Avenue and Cannon Road remained closed for much of the day while investigators processed the scene. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the identity of the victim after notifying next of kin.
Investigation: The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Detectives are examining whether alcohol played a role in the collision and will analyze roadway evidence, vehicle damage, and witness statements. Investigators may also review surveillance or dashcam footage to better understand the sequence of events.
