3 Friends Killed, 3 Others Injured in Caruthers Crash

Fresno County, CA (April 19, 2024) – A devastating collision in Caruthers last Friday evening resulted in the deaths of three friends and injuries to several others, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.

Incident Overview: The California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to a crash site at the intersection of Highway 41 and Nebraska Avenue, where two pickup trucks had collided. A 2000 Chevy Silverado, driven westbound on Nebraska Avenue by 57-year-old Mark Bruce of Fresno, reportedly failed to stop at a stop sign and struck a 2020 Dodge Ram towing a travel trailer that was heading southbound on Highway 41. The impact of the crash sent both vehicles down an embankment.

Tragically, the driver of the Chevy and two passengers—18-year-old Blanca Villegas of Selma and 17-year-old Dezirae Perez of Fresno—were killed in the accident. All three were ejected from the vehicle and none were restrained at the time of the crash. A third passenger in the Chevy also suffered major injuries. In the Dodge Ram, the driver sustained moderate injuries, a male passenger suffered major injuries, and a juvenile passenger reported pain.

Investigation and Legal Implications: As CHP continues its investigation, it is still unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role in this fatal incident. Given the relationships among the victims, this case underscores the need for sensitivity if legal action is taken by any of the surviving families. Based on the information provided, the families of the deceased passengers in the Chevy may be able to pursue a wrongful death claim for their losses. Additionally, the injured victims, including those in the Dodge and the surviving passenger in the Chevy, could file a personal injury claim through the insurer of the Chevy. The number of victims certainly complicates this situation and it will likely require experienced legal representation.

My heart goes out to the families and friends of Mark Bruce, Blanca Villegas, and Dezirae Perez during this time of profound sorrow. I also offer my best wishes to the surviving victims in this horrible crash. I hope that the ongoing investigation brings clarity and justice for the victims and their loved ones.
