Bakersfield, CA (April 7, 2025) — The Kern County Coroner’s Office has identified 52-year-old Paula Aranda as the bicyclist fatally injured in a March 19 collision in east Bakersfield. Aranda succumbed to her injuries on March 30 at Kern Medical, officials confirmed.
Incident Details: According to the CHP, the crash occurred around 4:59 p.m. at the intersection of Oswell Street and Fernvale Road. Aranda was riding her bicycle when she was struck by a 2024 GMC Sierra driven by a male motorist.
Emergency responders transported Aranda to Kern Medical, but despite lifesaving efforts, she passed away eleven days later due to the severity of her injuries. The driver remained at the scene and fully cooperated with authorities. No arrests were made at the time, and CHP reported that neither alcohol nor drugs appeared to be factors on the part of the driver. It is not yet known whether impairment played a role for the bicyclist.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: The California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash. In fatal collisions involving bicyclists, investigators typically review right-of-way, speed, visibility, and road conditions to determine fault or contributory negligence.
Even when no criminal charges are filed, the victim’s family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim, particularly if any form of driver negligence is determined, such as distraction, failure to yield, or unsafe speed.
Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has additional information is encouraged to contact CHP’s Bakersfield office.
During this difficult time, I extend my condolences to the Aranda family and loved ones.
