Bicyclist Killed in Early Morning Carlsbad Crash; DUI Suspected

Carlsbad, CA (September 13, 2025) – A bicyclist died after being struck by a vehicle on Carlsbad Boulevard early Saturday morning, according to local authorities.

Accident Details: Carlsbad police arrived at the 4400 block of Carlsbad Boulevard around 4:30 a.m. after reports of a collision involving a cyclist. When officers arrived, they found the bicyclist in the roadway with fatal injuries. The victim’s name has not yet been released pending notification of family by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

With assistance from the community, automated license plate readers, and a police drone, officers located the suspected driver about a mile from the crash site.

The driver, identified as 27-year-old Alexander Gendron of Escondido, was arrested on multiple charges, including suspicion of leaving the scene of a collision causing injury or death, DUI causing injury or death, and vehicular manslaughter.

Investigation: Police believe alcohol was a factor in the collision. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact them.

The Carlsbad Police Department is conducting a comprehensive investigation to determine the events that led to this crash. In addition to toxicology testing, accident reconstruction specialists will likely review physical evidence such as skid marks, vehicle damage, and debris patterns to estimate speed, point of impact, and braking behavior.

Investigators may also pull data from nearby traffic cameras, business surveillance systems, and the vehicle’s onboard systems or cell phone records to establish whether distractions or impaired driving contributed to the collision. Witness statements from those who saw the crash or its aftermath, combined with electronic evidence from license plate readers and police drones, can create a detailed timeline. Preserving this evidence early is crucial because memories fade, footage can be overwritten, and physical evidence may be lost as roads reopen.

Legal Considerations: Under California law, motorists must share the road safely with cyclists and stop and render aid when involved in a crash. Fleeing the scene or driving under the influence can result in severe penalties.

From a civil standpoint, the family of the deceased bicyclist may have grounds for a wrongful death claim. Such a claim could seek compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and the emotional toll of losing a loved one.

I extend my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the bicyclist who lost their life in this crash.
