Bailie French Killed in Tragic Crash in Fresno County

Fresno County, CA (February 1, 2025) – Authorities have identified Bailie French, 30, of Yokuts Valley, as the victim of a tragic crash on Highway 168 near Qualls Prather Road.

Accident Details: The collision occurred as French and her 7-year-old son were returning home to Tollhouse after visiting a friend. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), French lost control of her Subaru Crosstrek, which veered off the highway and plunged nearly 200 feet down an embankment. The vehicle rolled multiple times before resting in a grove of trees, making it difficult to spot from the road. Both French and her son were ejected from the vehicle. Tragically, French died at the scene. The boy stayed with his mother for nearly 12 hours before he was found by passersby, who saw him walking near the highway.

Investigation: Emergency responders transported the child to Valley Children’s Hospital, where he was treated for injuries, including a broken arm. His father joined him at the hospital. Authorities believe neither French nor her son was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The CHP continues to investigate the incident and is awaiting toxicology results to determine if alcohol or drugs were factors.

Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination.

  • Driver and Vehicle Control: Authorities will examine why French lost control of the Subaru Crosstrek. Factors such as distraction, speed, or driver fatigue will be considered.
  • Mechanical Failure: Investigators will inspect the vehicle for any potential defects, such as brake or steering issues, which could have contributed to the loss of control. The vehicle’s manufacturer or maintenance provider may share liability if a defect is found.
  • Road Conditions: The crash location along Highway 168 may present hazards such as sharp curves, poor visibility, or inadequate guardrails. The local government could face liability if road design or maintenance deficiencies contributed to the crash.
  • Seatbelt Use and Ejection: Authorities noted that neither French nor her son wore a seatbelt at the crash. Seatbelt use is crucial to preventing ejections and minimizing injury in rollover accidents. However, the investigation may assess whether mechanical or situational issues impacted seatbelt use.

French’s family may pursue a wrongful death claim if evidence points to negligence by another party, such as vehicle defects or hazardous road conditions. Compensation from such a claim could address funeral costs, lost financial support, and emotional pain. The boy’s father may also pursue a personal injury claim on behalf of his son to cover medical expenses and long-term trauma. If the lack of seatbelt was intentional, compensation may be reduced based on California’s comparative negligence laws.

I offer my deepest condolences to Bailie French’s family and loved ones. I wish her son a fast recovery. I hope the investigation brings answers to those affected.
