Tractor-Trailer Crash Critically Injures Driver, Shuts Down I-81 in Augusta County

Augusta County, VA (June 10, 2025) – A serious crash involving a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle occurred Saturday near mile marker 228 on Interstate 81 in Augusta County, critically injuring the truck driver and injuring two others.

Incident Details:
According to Virginia State Police and Augusta County Fire and Rescue, the tractor-trailer overturned on a bridge over the Middle River near Verona. The truck cab detached and fell into the river, while part of the trailer remained on the bridge and caught fire. A passenger vehicle was also involved in the collision. One injured individual was a good Samaritan who jumped into the river to help the truck driver.

Investigation and Legal Considerations:
Hazmat teams were dispatched to contain diesel leakage into the river. The truck driver was airlifted to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. Authorities, including local fire departments and Virginia State Police, responded quickly, and both lanes of I-81 northbound were reopened by Sunday morning. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
