Atwater Woman and Toddler Killed by Alleged DUI Driver Who Ran Stop Sign

Atwater, CA (June 1, 2025) — A 20-year-old woman and a 3-year-old child from Atwater were killed late Sunday night after a suspected DUI driver ran a stop sign and slammed into their vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Incident Details: The fatal crash occurred around 10:35 p.m. at the intersection of Southern Pacific Avenue and Commerce Avenue. CHP investigators say 19-year-old Moises Haven Castillo of Catheys Valley was speeding eastbound in a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado when he failed to stop at a posted stop sign. At the same time, a 17-year-old Atwater resident driving a 2025 Honda Civic, with three passengers, was attempting a left turn onto Commerce Avenue after coming to a stop.

Castillo’s pickup truck plowed into the passenger side of the Honda, violently tearing through both side doors. A 20-year-old woman seated in the back was ejected, and a 3-year-old child also in the rear seat sustained critical injuries. Both were later pronounced dead, one at the scene, the other at a nearby hospital.

The 17-year-old driver and another 18-year-old passenger attempted to help the victims before emergency personnel arrived. Castillo reportedly fled the scene on foot but was found by CHP officers and Atwater Police less than two hours later. He was hospitalized with minor injuries and arrested on suspicion of felony DUI, vehicular manslaughter, and felony hit-and-run.

Investigation and Legal Considerations: CHP’s investigation will likely include toxicology testing, collision reconstruction, and interviews with surviving witnesses.

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the families of the victims may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit for financial compensation related to funeral costs, emotional suffering, and the loss of companionship.

I send my condolences to the families during this difficult time.
