Two Injured in Tractor-Trailer Collision on Route 116 in Ashfield

Ashfield, MA (October 3, 2025) – Two people were hospitalized Friday after a collision involving a tractor-trailer on Route 116 in Ashfield, according to Massachusetts State Police.

Accident Details: Authorities said the crash occurred shortly before 10 a.m. near the intersection of Route 116 and Williamsburg Road. Initial reports indicated that a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle collided under circumstances still under investigation. Emergency responders from Ashfield, Conway, and the Massachusetts State Police arrived to find both vehicles with significant damage. Two occupants from the passenger vehicle were transported to Baystate Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The truck driver did not report any injuries.

The roadway was temporarily closed in both directions while crews worked to clear debris and tow the vehicles from the scene. Traffic resumed around noon. Photos from the scene showed extensive damage to the car’s front end and a large amount of debris scattered across the highway.

Investigation: Troopers assigned to the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section are investigating the cause of the crash. They are examining skid marks, vehicle positions, and sightlines to determine whether speed, distraction, or mechanical failure may have played a role. Investigators will also review the truck’s inspection and maintenance records to ensure the vehicle was in compliance with federal and state safety standards. The Ashfield Police Department and local fire personnel assisted at the scene.

Legal Considerations: Collisions involving tractor-trailers often raise complex questions of liability. Trucking companies and drivers are required to follow strict regulations regarding maintenance, cargo loading, and hours of service. If evidence shows a violation of these standards, injured parties may have grounds for a personal injury claim to recover medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages. Documentation from the truck’s onboard systems and eyewitness accounts will be crucial in determining fault.

This accident serves as another reminder of the dangers of sharing narrow rural roads with large commercial vehicles. I wish those injured a swift and full recovery.
