Burlingame, CA (March 11, 2025) – Authorities have identified 61-year-old Arlene O’Campo of Daly City as the pedestrian killed in a hit-and-run collision on March 11, 2025, at the intersection of El Camino Real and Trousdale Drive, according to the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office.
Accident Details: O’Campo was reportedly crossing in a marked crosswalk with the right-of-way when a red SUV struck her. According to Burlingame Police Department Traffic Director Jason Orloff, the SUV driver ran a red light on El Camino Real before fleeing the scene.
Authorities later arrested the driver on felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter charges, though the suspect’s identity has not yet been released. The case has been referred to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Drivers are legally required to stop at red lights and yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. In this case, the driver allegedly ran a red light, disregarding traffic signals and O’Campo’s right-of-way. Leaving the scene of an accident without rendering aid also violates California law.
Authorities will analyze surveillance footage, witness statements, and traffic camera data to establish a timeline of the crash. They will also review the SUV’s black box data (if available) to determine vehicle speed, braking patterns, and acceleration leading up to the crash. This evidence will be crucial in proving the driver’s potential negligence.
If investigators confirm that negligence caused the crash, O’Campo’s family may have grounds to file a wrongful death claim and seek financial compensation.
I extend my sincerest condolences to the family and loved ones of Arlene O’Campo.
