Antonio Boccia, 78, Dies After Being Struck by Vehicle in La Mesa

La Mesa, California  (March 16, 2026) — A 78-year-old man died Monday morning after being struck by a vehicle in La Mesa, according to authorities.

Officials identified the victim as Antonio Boccia.

The collision occurred in the 10000 block of Challenge Boulevard during the morning hours.

Incident Details: According to authorities, Boccia was struck by a vehicle while in the roadway along Challenge Boulevard.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene and found Boccia suffering from severe blunt-force trauma. He was transported by ambulance to Sharp Memorial Hospital for treatment. Despite medical efforts, Boccia was pronounced dead shortly after 8:30 a.m. due to the injuries he sustained in the crash.

Authorities have not released additional details about the vehicle involved or the driver. It is also unclear whether the driver remained at the scene or whether any other individuals were injured.

Investigation: The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation by local authorities.

In pedestrian collisions, investigators typically examine factors such as pedestrian location, driver visibility, roadway conditions, and vehicle speed. Determining whether the pedestrian was crossing at a marked crosswalk or elsewhere along the roadway can be a key component of the investigation. Crash reconstruction may include analysis of impact location, debris patterns, and any available surveillance footage from nearby homes or businesses. Investigators may also evaluate whether the driver had sufficient time and distance to perceive and react to the pedestrian.

At this stage, officials have not announced any citations or criminal charges. The investigation remains ongoing.

Legal Considerations: Pedestrian crashes often raise important legal questions about right-of-way and driver responsibility.

Under California law, drivers are required to exercise reasonable care to avoid striking pedestrians, even when pedestrians are not in a marked crosswalk. These cases often involve a detailed review of driver attentiveness and whether appropriate caution was exercised under the circumstances.

If negligence is found to have contributed to the collision, Boccia’s surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim to address the losses resulting from the incident.

During this difficult time, I offer my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Antonio Boccia.
